Cats of the Hermitage

The legendary Hermitage cats have appeared in the Winter Palace since the Palace existed in the time of Catherine II. Today there are more than 50 cats in the Hermitage Museum. They help museum personnel fight rodents in the basements of the Winter Palace.

Every year at the end of March, the museum holds “The Day of a March Cat”, where anyone can donate money to support the cats of the Hermitage or take one home.
