Floods

The history of St. Petersburg is a history of fights with floods. In the time of Peter the Great’s rule from 1703 till 1725, there were 11 floods. The whole city history counts more than 300. The most catastrophic one happened in 1824 when more than 400 houses were destroyed and more than 3500 were badly damaged.

The flood of 1955 was the last catastrophic one. In 1982 the dedicated dike system started to be built around the city to protect it from elements.
