The Legend Behind the Name
Peter the First was born on June, 29, 1672 which is the day of St Peter in the Russian Orthodox calendar. Before the foundation of St. Petersburg, he longed to name a fortress in honour of his Christian patron. This fortress was destined to become a key one, opening the gate to a sea for Russia.
The first campaign to get access to the Black Sea in 1697 was a failure and only 6 years later, the fortress named after St. Peter was founded on the shore of the Finnish Gulf, destined to start a new Russian capital, St. Petersburg.
